The Office of Sustainability, Resilience and Community Transformation spearheads a comprehensive strategy that includes amplifying Newark'a tree canopy; increasing access to nourishing, locally-grown food; fostering climate-resilient communities; and transitioning to clean energy; and connecting communities.

Our collaborative approach involves partnerships with municipal departments, the Newark Environmental Commission, and residents to ensure that sustainability efforts are community-centered and effectively address the needs of all residents, particularly the most vulnerable to weather extremes.

The City of Newark’s Office of Sustainability, Resilience and Community Transformation, under the leadership of Mayor Ras J. Baraka, has launched Heat Safe Newark! It is a comprehensive, citywide, neighborhood-based strategy to make Newark cooler, healthier, greener, and more resilient in the face of rising temperatures and climate change.

The initiative focuses on creating safer, cooler public spaces while building long-term climate resilience across the city. Other initiatives include Rooted in Newark and Cool Roofs Newark.
